MENTOR MONSTERS

HE TOOK the trouble to counsel a teenager who was prostituting himself to older men.
By Chong Shin Yen

28 August 2009

HE TOOK the trouble to counsel a teenager who was prostituting himself to older men.

Ng Geng Whye, 51, a businessman, even found a job for the 15-year-old to keep him occupied.

The boy’s family was grateful to him for his help. In March 2007, the family went to Ng’s restaurant to eat and to thank him.

But later that night, Ng went from mentor to predator.

When he and the teen were alone in the restaurant, Ng performed oral sex on him.

Yesterday, Ng pleaded guilty to one charge of committing an obscene act with a young person under the Children and Young Persons Act.

He was among six men who were charged with similar offences relating to the same teen.

The teen, now 17, cannot be identified due to a court order.

Ng, who is married with a 14-year-old son, used to be an assistant director at the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB).

The court heard that he got to know the teen through a popular gay website in 2006.

The boy lied that he was 16 on the website but would reveal his real age to anyone he met personally or chatted with on the telephone.

The teen began chatting with strangers on social networking websites at the age of 9 when he was in Primary 3.

By the time he was 12, he was a regular on an online chatroom popular with homosexual men.

In December 2006, the teen needed money to ‘maintain his lifestyle’, so he decided to pimp himself out to strangers by posting messages on the website saying he was ’seeking paid fun’.

He received several responses from men who frequented the website, one of whom was Ng.

The court heard that the boy offered to perform sexual acts on Ng for $150, but Ng turned down his offer.

They continued to chat online and Ng advised the teen not to continue peddling his sexual services.

In February 2007, the teen ran away from home after a dispute with his girlfriend.

He met Ng online again and after a chat, they decided to meet for the first time in person.

Ng went to pick up the teen and bought him supper. While they were talking, Ng found out that the boy was interested in singing.

He told the teen that he had a good voice and that if he was interested, he could recommend someone to coach him to become a singer.

When the boy told Ng he was keen to take up singing classes, Ng took him to a music school which was owned by someone he knew, the court heard.

They became close and would meet frequently, during which Ng would often advise the boy to change his ways.

Family was grateful

In March 2007, Ng found a part-time job for the boy and would drive him home after work.

One day, the teen’s family, including his mother, brother and grandparents, went to Ng’s Peranakan restaurant at Kampong Bahru Road for a meal.

The court heard that while they were there, his family thanked Ng for taking care of him and looking out for him.

The family left after their meal but the teen stayed behind.

At about 9pm, after the restaurant had closed for the day, Ng switched off the lights and suddenly pushed the boy onto a table in the dining area.

He then unzipped the teen’s trousers and performed oral sex on him.

They stopped contacting each other after the incident.

Two months later, the boy’s mother received an anonymous phone call. The caller told her about her son’s activities on the Internet.

After she confronted him and learnt what he had been up to, she lodged a police report on 18 May that year.

In his mitigation, Ng’s lawyer, Mr Wendell Wong, said that Ng and the teen had a developing friendship before and during the offence.

Mr Wong said that Ng had committed the offence ‘in the heat of the moment’ and had now fully realised the severity of his foolish mistake.

He added that Ng had always played the part of a mentor who dissuaded the teen from pimping himself and never had any intention to sexually exploit the teen in any way.

Mr Wong also said that there was no element of exploitation, in which money was used as a bait or a reward.

Instead, the boy had been pouring out his woes to and seeking advice from Ng.

But Deputy Public Prosecutor Shahla Iqbal said the offence was serious.

She said that Ng, who was much older and mature, had breached the trust of the teen.

Ng, who has been married for 19 years, left CNB in 1995. At that time, he was also the president of the Singapore DanceSport Federation, a position he held for 16 years.

He later worked as a project manager for Unusual Productions, an events and concert promotion company, for nine years before opening his own restaurant. It has since closed.

Ng, who now runs an events and artiste management business, will be sentenced on 18 Sep.

For committing an obscene or indecent act with a child or young person, Ng can be jailed up to two years and fined $5,000.

> Man feigns death for 3 hours to avoid police questioning

Friday 21st August OSAKA — A 22-year-old man, who was arrested Wednesday night for assault and obstruction of duty after he rear-ended the motorcycle of a police officer, feigned death for about three hours, police said Thursday.

According to police, Yuji Matsumura of Sakai City was riding his motorcycle with some friends when he ran into the motorcycle of the police officer. He tried to escape but was apprehended about 400 meters from the crash.

Seconds after he was handcuffed, Matsumura collapsed and pretended to be dead. Police called for an ambulance even though his breathing and heartbeat were normal. Matsumura put on a good show, however, and didn’t even flinch when medics inserted a catheter into his urethra. A doctor who performed a CT scan found no abnormalities.

This went on for three hours, police said, until Matsumura’s mother came to the hospital to identify him. He returned to his senses at the sound of her voice.

Matsumura was quoted by police as saying: “I was tired, so I just went to sleep.”

> Boy drinks gasoline for 5 years to copy ‘Transformers’

Monday, August 3, 2009 BEIJING – A 14-year-old boy drank gasoline for five years to obtain “energy” —just as his idols “Bumblebee” or “Optimus Prime” do in “Transformers,” the Sichuan-based West China Metropolis Daily reported on Saturday.

After the boy, in Yibin City, southwest Sichuan Province, had watched the animated TV series, he began to drink gasoline to become a “valiant fighter” like “Optimus Prime,” his father told the newspaper.

“He began to drink gasoline five years ago, when we found that he liked smelling lighter fuel,” he said.

The boy’s mother owned a grocery stall, selling small goods such as lighters.

In 2004, she often found lighters missing two or three days after she’d bought them. She later found that her son had been stealing them.

The parents talked to their son and asked him not to do it again. “But afterwards we found our motorcycle’s gasoline was always disappearing, and one day when we found the boy had drunk a half bottle of gasoline stolen from the motorcycle, we were too shocked to say anything,” the father said.

IQ Dropped

They locked the motorcycle away after that but the boy began to steal gasoline from neighbors and was drinking more and more — two or three bottles at a time.

“Since my son started to drink gas, his IQ has dropped sharply and now he can’t figure out simple addition and subtraction,” the father said.

“Before that, he was a very smart boy, and he could even repair the television. But now he does not know the answer of 7 plus 17.”

The worried parents finally took their son to hospital where they were told the boy had a mental disorder and a strong “gasoline dependence.”

“The gasoline contains a lot of lead, which can do harm to people’s brains. To make thing even worse, the boy is in the physical development stage, and the lead has caused serious damage to his body,” Peng Houquan, a doctor from a hospital in Yibin, said.

“Transformers” is now a Hollywood blockbuster movie franchise and the second live-action film is currently breaking box office records in China.

“Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” has gained 400 million yuan (US$58.4 million) in the country, breaking the record set by “Titanic” 10 years ago.
