> Mas Selamat captured

Thirteen months after his audacious escape from detention in Singapore, Mas Selamat Kastari has been caught in Malaysia.

Singapore’s most wanted terrorist was captured on April 1 while hiding in Johor, regional intelligence sources told The Straits Times.

It is believed that he was nabbed in the outskirts of Johor Baru and is now being held by the Malaysian authorities for interrogation.

It is not known how he slipped out of Singapore or when he entered Malaysia.

Although he was arrested six weeks ago, the Malaysian authorities have not yet announced the capture.

A senior Malaysian government official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the arrest and said that Mas Selamat was being held under the country’s Internal Security Act.

He declined to say when the terrorist would be handed over to the Singapore authorities.

It is believed that the fugitive had stayed in Johor all this time and had not travelled further north. He is also believed to be detained in Johor.

Sources told The Straits Times that the 48-year-old was tracked down based on intelligence provided by Singapore’s Internal Security Department (ISD), and a joint operation by Malaysia and Singapore’s security agencies eventually led to his arrest.

The capture of Mas Selamat brings to an end one of the largest manhunts ever undertaken by Singapore and its neighbours for a terrorist on the run.

> Doctor arrested for molesting patient at hospital

TOKYO — Police on Thursday arrested a doctor at a hospital in Toshima Ward for allegedly molesting a female patient during an examination in May 2004. The 53-year-old physician was identified as Yoshiaki Horie.

The woman, who was in her 20s at the time, was receiving an endoscopy from the doctor when he allegedly molested her with the instrument. According to police investigations, Horie denies the charges, and was quoted as saying, “I didn’t intend to do anything wrong. My hand just suddenly slipped.”

The case came to light recently after the patient notified police in February, conscious that the statue of limitations would be up in May.

> Voices tell Andy Lee, NUS undergrad, to molest young boys?~

A PSYCHIATRIST told a court yesterday that a National University of Singapore undergraduate, who is on trial for molesting three schoolboys, was suffering from severe depression which went undiagnosed and untreated.

Dr Ang Yong Guan said Andy Lee Kee Liang’s condition impaired his judgment, making him do things without realising the consequences or nature of his acts.

The 24-year-old had said that voices prompted him to commit the offences against the boys, aged between 14 and 15.

During cross-examination, Deputy Public Prosecutor Isaac Tan mentioned a police statement Lee made in October 2007, in which he said that a few years before, he had followed a boy into a lift and tried to touch his hand.

He asked Dr Ang if this raised doubt whether what Lee said about the voices was true.

Dr Ang replied that this was a period when Lee was not depressed and was able to control his impulses.

‘He showed an inclination. He wanted to touch a boy but he could resist the temptation,’ he said.

Asked by the DPP if it was homosexual inclination, the witness agreed.

While Lee had homosexual tendencies, he had also had meaningful relationships with three girlfriends before, said Dr Ang.

Dr Ang was called as one of the defence’s expert witnesses to testify on Lee’s mental state.

Lee is claiming that he was of unsound mind at the time of the 2007 alleged offences of aggravated molestation and unnatural sex.

The court was told that Lee, clad in jogging attire, would follow his victims and commit sexual acts on them in lifts.

Dr Ang said Lee missed his late father and had complained of dark moods and poor concentration. His symptoms worsened and were compounded by his mother’s relationship with a new boyfriend, who later moved into their home.

From 2007, Dr Ang said, Lee started hearing voices hinting to him to do silly things such as hurting himself or others. He said it was in that state of severe depression that Lee committed the offences. The hearing continues.

> 17yo raped by trio on terror ride

A teenage girl was found in the nude with three men in a car parked near the Machap toll plaza here on Sunday.

The 17-year-old girl was believed to have been raped and was saved from further abuse by policemen who turned up at the scene after a tip-off.

State police chief Datuk Mokhtar Shariff said a patrol car went to the scene at 2am and found the girl sobbing in the back seat of the Proton Wira.

She was flanked by two men.

The men and the driver, aged between 20 and 27, were immediately arrested and are now being investigated for rape. The trio were self-employed and lived here.

The girl, who is a Form Five student, was sent to Kluang Hospital for a medical check-up.

“She is traumatised. We are waiting for her to recover from the shock before recording a statement from her,” said Mokhtar.

Initial investigations showed that the girl was approached by the three men while she was waiting for a friend at a coffee shop.

The men had coaxed the teenager into accepting a ride from them before driving her to a secluded spot near the Machap toll plaza.

Mokhtar thanked the caller who had informed police about the incident.

“The person led us to rescue the girl from a worse fate.”
